It is finished

John 19:30 “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘it is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

Every day is full of work to be done. Many things to be accomplished. Responsibilities that need to be handed on. As we face our daily tasks in life, we can consider them as our daily challenges. Everyone of us has a mission in this world. While we are still alive, our mission is not yet finished.

In Jesus’ life, he carried all the responsibilities in this world that the Father gave Him. He grew in carpentry by vocation. As an eldest son, it was his responsibility to help his father to raise the family. At his young age, his father died. But before his father died, Jesus was well oriented to all household works. He served his family until the age of thirty and then he started his ministry.

His ministry was not easy, he encountered several challenges. He suffered persecutions, rejections, betrayals and even denial. But because of his love for the world, he absorbed all the pains for the sake of his Father’s glory. On his final day here on earth, the enemy made his final attack on him. He suffered terrible pain until he gave up his spirit to God. Before He died via crucifixion, he declared, “it is finished.”

It is finished because his mission is finished. He saved the world through his death on the cross. He paid our sins, he forgave our sins, he gave us life and he restored God’s image in us. He redeemed us from the bondage of sin. From a virgin birth to the death on the cross, it was not an easy life, but it was his joy to restore the relationship of the world and his Father in heaven.

We people of the world, we rejoice for the salvation that is free by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Sufferings, struggles, sins and guilt have lost their grip on our lives as Jesus declared, “it is finished”. All we need to do is to enjoy life in the presence of God, serving him and glorifying his name all the days of our life. Do not go back to your past instead focus on what is ahead. “The old has gone and the new has come”. 2 Corinthians 5:17b it is finished.
