“So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.” Genesis 2:3
God has given us the freedom to do all the work in six days. But He has commanded us to dedicate the seventh day of the week for Him. This day is supposed to be spent honoring Him alone by reflecting on His goodness. All kinds of people, even servants, are not entitled to do any type of work, for this day is for God alone. He has made it clear to keep the Sabbath Day sacred. (Exodus 20:8-10)
Even the Lord rested after making everything in six days. He has blessed the Sabbath Day and made it holy for us to realize that He instituted this for our own benefit. God wants us to realize that even Him, the God of all, took the time to rest. He wants us to see the importance of dedicating a specific day to recharge our physical bodies and minds by worshiping Him.
The Sabbath Day is not just for breaking daily routines or resting physically. Above all, it is a day to spend unhurried time worshiping God. It should be spent attending church services or discipleship groups, and even a time to have devotionals as a family. In other words, it is a day well-spent for the Lord without rushing to do something else. No distractions, just God and your faith.
We now live in a world where working is necessary. We always seem to have something to do and just a little time left for rest. Yet God demonstrated that it is okay to rest because it is right and appropriate. If He rested on the seventh day, what makes us think we don’t need it? Sabbath Day is a gift that He wants us to observe weekly.
God has commanded us to take a break and be recharged for a day. This day of unhurried rest will refresh us for our time of service to our family, friends, and workplace. But more than that, we have to dedicate this specific day to worship Him alone. May we never neglect this privilege from Him.Â
